Program Experiences
-Zachary Group Project. This project spanned a total of 6 months and was performed in a group of 4 other girls. The project entailed getting to know the city of Zachary by putting together a book that showcased the city's strengths and weaknesses, creating a nursing diagnosis that dealt with the biggest weakness we had found, and then working with that target population to create an event that provided an opportunity to learn healthy alternatives to current lifestyles in a fun and nonthreatening way. Throughout the completion of this project, I learned the value of working in a group on a level previously unknown to me. I learned what my weaknesses in group situations are, but also what my strengths in group situations are, and genuinely enjoyed working with each of the members of my group.

-Review of Literature. I am very interested in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Therapies, after being exposed to its' benefits a few years ago. Before conducting a review of literature, I knew CAM therapies was an emerging field of medicine, but I wanted to research to learn more about it and how it is affecting America today. The paper I wrote showcased the research I did by including findings from each of the sources, and a brief overall analysis of the findings. I learned so much about scholarly nursing research through the writing of this paper-- its' purpose, benefits, and impact on nursing practice.

-Capstone Project. The capstone paper was a semester-long project that built off of the review of literature paper. In order to display our semester-long work, and answer any questions about it, a poster was also created and presented at the end of the semester. After finding a gap in the literature, I created a survey and disseminated it to three registered nurses in order to collect data for the question that research had not yet answered. The focus of my paper centered around this research question: were nurses being adequately educated to understand the importance of having conversations with patients, within the general health exam, about the risks and benefits of utilizing CAM therapies?

-Clinical Journal Reflection. My final semester, I precepted in the Orthopedics unit at OLOL RMC. It was during this preceptorship that I began making the transition from nursing student who answered to a clinical instructor for all patient-related issues to a student nurse who was given the freedom to make independent decisions for her patients under the protective umbrella of a preceptor. Each week I was asked to write a reflection about a specific situation that had occurred on the unit, so the following document is one of my reflections from my Orthopedic preceptorship experience. My preceptorship experience was invaluable, and the reflection assignment helped me to process some of the things that I was growing through, and allowed me to have instructor-feedback on those things as well.

-Personal Change Agent Project. Over the course of a single class, I was asked to name one habit/attitude that I wanted to change about myself, and keep a weekly journal of the progress I made. The project not only helped me to identify an unhealthy habit I wanted to see changed in my life, but also gave me much-needed practice in writing nursing diagnoses, interventions, outcomes, and an overall evaluation of the progress I had made. The following is the overall semester-long process in a single document outlining the progress I had made. The change agent project was the first taste of creating care plans that I'd had, and being able to receive feedback from instructors throughout the semester-long process gave me the correction and confidence I needed to create better care plans in the future.

-Care Plan, Pathophysiology, and Medication sheet. The next few documents represent my last care plan I created for a patient in nursing school. They reflect the time and energy that went in to making the care plans, researching the pathophysiology of the disease, and the medications the patient used along with their common adverse effects.
